Pizzeria Venti co-owner Terry Moon and his son Evan just returned from a trip to Italy. When you come by the restaurant, you can see pictures taken by Terry on his 2008 trip to Italy, too.
At my first Tweetup, I was nervous to actually speak to people I’d only “met” via Twitter. In anticipation of this Thursday’s Tweetup, I am actually more nervous about NOT talking. But I think it will be fun!
Yep, Pizzeria Venti will be the site of the first-ever Silent Tweetup this Thursday at 8:00!
Why?
Well, it all started with Clark Harris of Atlanta. He is the man behind the @SilentClark Twitter account. This month, he has foregone the most traditional forms of communication — speaking, written notes, text messaging, sign language and even email. His only forms of communication have been social media, including his Twitter account, his blog and his Facebook page.
Clark started this silent social media journey to raise awareness for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). And he wants to raise money for leukemia research in honor of his mother, Ruth Harris, who died on February 14, 2009, after a 10-year battle with leukemia. (He’s also curious about the applications of social media…)
When the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society — originally called the Robert Roesler de Villiers Foundation — was founded in the 1950s, most leukemia patients, especially children, died within three months.
Today, patients diagnosed with blood cancers have many reasons to hope for a good outcome:
- There are an estimated 912,938 people in the United States who are currently living with, or are in remission from, leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma.
- In the past 48 years, the relative five-year survival rate for people with leukemia nearly quadrupled
- Hodgkin lymphoma is now considered one of the most curable forms of cancer.
Source: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Success in treating blood cancers is due in large part to treatment advances related to the $600 million in research funding from LLS since 1954.
But the LLS isn’t done. According to the organization, “Every ten minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. This statistic represents nearly 146 people each day, or more than six people every hour. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.”
It is important that the organization continue its mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Clark’s ultimate goal is to raise $100,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. You can put him closer to his goal on Thursday.
Won’t you join these great Atlanta folks on Thursday to help SILENCE CANCER?
The tweetup starts at 8:00. We’re planning to be in the private back room at Pizzeria Venti. There is a $10 cover — all of which will go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Pizzeria Venti will provide free appetizers. To order drinks and anything else, just show us your tweet at the counter!
It’s France vs. Italy in Pizzeria Venti’s Wine Cup!
We will pour three French wines and three Italian wines. All of our tasters will vote for their favorite wines. We won’t tell you which is which until you’ve voted.

We are excited to participate in Dining Out for Life 2010!

Dining Out for Life is a benefit that helps Open Hand provide freshly prepared, home-delivered meals, nutrition education, coaching and counseling to homebound seniors and individuals who are struggling with chronic, critical or terminal disease in 17 Georgia counties.
We’ll donate 20% of every dollar you spend on Wed., April 21. Come for lunch and dinner — and bring your friends!
From Project Open Hand:
Each and every day, the organization — with the help of over 125 volunteers — prepares and delivers more than 5,000 freshly cooked, nutritious meals to people in metro-Atlanta whose health complications have impaired their ability to prepare meals for themselves.
Our clients include homebound seniors, dependent children and persons with chronic, critical and terminal illnesses – 91% of whom live below the federal poverty level.
With only 30% of Open Hand’s annual budget coming from corporate and government sources, the organization relies on contributions from individuals in order to continue to serve the community. And Dining Out for Life — our largest annual fundraising event — plays a vital role in helping us bridge that funding gap.

So we’ll give you a 50/50 chance at winning free food!

Here are the rules:
- Dine at Pizzeria Venti (2770 Lenox Road) on April 1, 2010.
- When you order, you’ll pay for that meal.
- We’ll flip a quarter.
- Heads — We win, but you also get to enjoy your wonderful meal.
- Tails — You win! You get to enjoy your wonderful meal AND we’ll give you a gift card for the same amount as your bill.*
One coin toss per customer. If you’d like to order dessert, please order with your meal. No separate coin tosses for customers.

*We’ll pre-load gift cards in $5 increments, so we’ll round your total to the nearest $5. For example, if your ticket is $7.50, we’ll give you a $10 gift card. If your ticket is $7.49, we’ll give you a $5 gift card. $25 maximum on gift cards.
And if you’re looking to have a little fun on April Fool’s Day, here are a few great ideas for the office. (We love #3 & #5!)
